Stormy Friday night with a severe weather threat
Tonight, another round of thunderstorms will roll through New York and the surrounding Northeast corridor. Strong to severe storms are possible, with all modes of severe weather on the table — including damaging winds, isolated large hail, and a brief tornado or two. These storms will develop late this evening and continue into early Saturday morning, before weakening as temperatures dip into the mid-60s°F (around 18°C).
Friday began on a calmer note, with mostly sunny skies early in the day. But cloud cover increased steadily through the afternoon. Temperatures hovered in the mid to upper 70s°F (24–26°C), with southerly winds between 10 and 15 mph, occasionally gusting up to 25 mph. Thunderstorm activity started off isolated, but will grow more scattered through the evening. As storms fire up, severe weather risks will intensify, especially after sunset.
Saturday’s weather: clearing skies but lingering showers
By Saturday morning, expect mostly cloudy skies with a few leftover showers. However, as the day progresses, skies should become mostly sunny by the afternoon. Temperatures will hold in the upper-70s°F (25–26°C) with light winds around 10 mph. Late afternoon may bring a return of isolated showers or a thunderstorm, but rain chances will fade into the evening. Overnight, expect mostly cloudy skies as temperatures fall to the low-60s°F (around 17°C).
Sunday: calm before the heat
Sunday brings a break from the storms, with mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies throughout the day. It will feel comfortable but warm, with highs near the upper-70s°F (around 26°C) and a breeze up to 15 mph, with gusts nearing 20 mph. Sunday night will be quiet, with partly cloudy conditions and overnight lows in the mid-60s°F (18°C).
Next week: heat and humidity return
Starting Monday, the region enters a warmer and more humid pattern. Highs will return to the 80s°F (27–29°C), and heat index values could reach the low to mid-90s°F (33–35°C). Monday through Wednesday will feature partly to mostly cloudy skies, with on-and-off showers and thunderstorms possible each day. Temperatures will gradually rise, with mid-80s°F (29–30°C) expected by Tuesday and Wednesday. Overnight lows during this period will remain mild, dropping to the upper-60s°F (around 20°C) and low-70s°F (21–22°C).
Late week outlook: warmer, with scattered storms
Heading into Thursday through next Sunday, conditions may trend slightly quieter, although a round of storms is possible Friday night into Saturday morning. Expect daytime highs in the low to mid-80s°F (28–30°C), with high humidity continuing to push heat index values toward the 90s°F (32–34°C). Nights will stay warm, with overnight lows in the upper-60s°F (around 20°C).
