Heat and humidity reach their peak today in New York City
This Thursday, July 17, New York City is enduring the most intense day of this week’s heat wave. Temperatures are forecast to hit 95°F (35°C), with the heat index soaring as high as 103°F (39°C), making outdoor conditions feel dangerously hot and uncomfortable. According to FOX 5 NY’s Mike Woods, the day will feel like triple digits, especially during the early afternoon hours.
A heat advisory is in effect until 10:00 p.m. tonight for the entire NYC metro area, as high humidity levels push the air to feel even hotter than the thermometer suggests.
Thursday’s outlook: dangerous heat with afternoon storms possible
Skies will remain partly sunny through most of the day, but scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop by late afternoon. These storms could become severe, bringing gusty winds, heavy downpours, and localized flooding. Air temperatures will remain in the mid-90s°F (around 35°C), while overnight lows will only dip to about 75°F (24°C), offering little overnight relief from the heat.
Relief begins Friday as humidity drops
After this oppressive Thursday, a noticeable shift arrives Friday. The humidity will fall, allowing for a much more comfortable day. Expect partly cloudy skies and highs in the mid-80s°F (29°C to 30°C), with lighter winds and improved air quality. Friday night will stay cloudy, with temperatures in the low 70s°F (21°C).
Milder weekend pattern ahead, but clouds linger
On Saturday, temperatures will hold in the low 80s°F (27°C to 28°C), but skies will remain mostly cloudy. By Saturday night, scattered showers are likely to return, especially after sunset, with lows hovering around 75°F (24°C). Though the humidity won’t disappear completely, the worst of the heat wave will be behind us.
