Rain continues to disrupt weekends in Boston
Boston, once again, faced persistent rain this past Saturday, marking the 13th consecutive wet Saturday — officially breaking the city’s previous record. The longest recorded streak of rainy Saturdays was 12, last seen in 1943 and 1970, but this latest June 2025 weekend has rewritten the books.
Spring and early summer in New England have been unseasonably gloomy, frustrating residents and disrupting weekend plans. While Fridays have offered brief respites of sunshine, the transition to the weekend has been marked by a return to gray skies and precipitation.
Local reactions and impact on city life
Many residents, like Zach Baron of South Boston, expressed their disappointment. “You work all week, it’s beautiful, then by Saturday, here comes the rain,” he said, echoing the sentiment of thousands across the Greater Boston area.
Outdoor dining venues, especially in neighborhoods like South Boston and Beacon Hill, have seen a tangible shift in business. Brett Ursino, bartender at Petula’s, noted that under clear skies, they’d expect full tables and even a line out the door. Instead, the rain has kept would-be diners inside or on the go.
Not all businesses are suffering, though. Mimi Murphy, who owns a retail shop in Beacon Hill, described the wet weekends as “either a blessing or a curse.” She emphasized that graduation ceremonies and summer festivals have kept foot traffic steady. “If it weren’t for the events,” she added, “we’d have radio silence.”
Saturday forecast and future outlook
Pamela Gardner reports that this past Saturday saw not only steady rainfall, but also the potential for thunderstorms, continuing a trend of unstable atmospheric conditions that’s characterized the 2025 spring season.
Despite the dreary weather, New Englanders have tried to adapt, many opting for Friday evening outings while the weather is still cooperating. As for the rest of June, models indicate a continued pattern of moisture-laden systems pushing through the northeast, meaning more wet weekends could be on the horizon for Massachusetts.
